NEW JERSEY ARBORISTS, CHAPTER ISA, INC.

The Arborists Association of NJ was organized by a group of dedicated arborists from North Jersey in the late 1930's, but membership grew so rapidly after World War II that it became necessary to broaden the scope of activities in such areas as education, legislation, and other membership interests.

Early in 1947, in cooperation with Rutgers University, the AANJ initiated an educational program, whereby members could attain the credential of Approved Arborist. This credential was initiated to improve the standards of the profession of the time, particularly climbers and working arborists.

The AANJ was primarily responsible for the introduction and successful passage of legislation marking the last Friday in April (A-404) 1949 as Arbor Day in New Jersey. They also assisted in the naming of the Red oak (Quercus rubra ) the official State Tree of New Jersey (A. C. R. #12) in 1950. The following year the AANJ supported legislation, introduced by the Garden Club of New Jersey, establishing the native Flowering Dogwood ( Cornus florida alba) the official War Memorial Tree for New Jersey.

Down through the years the AANJ consistently sought to interest young people to seek a career in professional arboriculture, and to help those already in the industry to improve their knowledge and expertise. The AANJ, merged with the NJISA to become the NJAISA, today provides a stronger and unified organizational structure that gives members and citizens of NJ alike a better chance to advance their various abilities to their fullest potential to become leaders in this challenging field of professional arboriculture.
